If you can get a copy cheap lots of secondhand copies available on the web or your local library has it, it's definitely worth a thorough read.
Gottsegen's book is pretty good but very slim by comparison so although it's inexpensive the value is difficult to judge in comparison to The Artist's Handbook. It has the benefit of being written by someone with the inside track on ASTM testing methods and results but even so I was surprised at some of his recommendations don't read too much into that. It's also not as comprehensive in some areas as you might want and a bit thin on illustrating methods - you'll very often find yourself longing for some good SBS photos or more and better drawings - but it's interesting and well written and you can easily go cover to cover in a single sitting, as I did recently.
